Fatal Calling World Map.jpg

Go to the Northern Cavern region spot on the World Map -- part of the red "specials" section.
You must have completed Chapter 1: Blank Slate to get there.
It is not necessary to have played through Eclipse Contact, but it will give some background for this story.

The event is separated into four parts:

Part 1[edit | edit source]

The action starts at the Northern Cavern, where you reunite with Cloud. We then shift to Mako City Midgar to gather the supplies -- and Materia -- you'll need to take on Sephiroth.

The Lifestream[edit | edit source]

Starts four weeks after the event begins.

  • The final areas in the Northern Cavern open, with high-end challenges for the advanced player.

Materia[edit | edit source]

The event includes new mechanics during play in these regions:

Materia commands.jpg

These regions offer an extra set of commands / abilities that can be used in battle, provided by Materia, similar to the command system used by Final Fantasy VII.

The first new thing you're given is a Icon Materia Plate.png Materia Plate, which allows you to access and plug in various materia that you obtain during the story. As the story progresses, you get better Plates that offer more uses of each command, multiple materia sockets for each action, and linked sockets.

During battle, actionable commands show on the opposite side of the screen from your Abilities.

  • You get a specified number of uses per command over the course of a battle. These do not replenish between skirmishes.
  • ... unless you are defeated, and use a Icon Phoenix Down.png Phoenix Down to revive, in which case you get a fresh stock of materia commands.
  • These commands do not use any of your elemental orbs.
  • These commands do not consume one of your moves.
  • These commands can be set and used regardless of your Job's elemental affinities. Use this to your advantage!

Most Materia come as spheres that drop from enemies you defeat. Some more powerful materia are given as rewards in Treasure Chests. The Materia will naturally gather in your collection. They come in five types:

Type examples description
Icon Materia Magic Fire.png Magic Fire, Blizzard offensive spells. These get more powerful as you collect more spheres.
Icon Materia Enhancement.png Enhancement Haste, Wall gives you boons.
Icon Materia Ailment.png Ailment Curse, Crit Down casts ailments on the enemy
Icon Materia Support.png Support Doublecast, Area modifies other materia with the listed power
Icon Materia Solo.png Solo HP Up, Attack Up increases your attributes for the length of the battle.
does not increase in power, not selectable in battle.
  • As you gather more of a particular kind, that kind gets a higher Materia Level. The greater the level of an offensive spell, the more damage it will do.
  • Commands will offer multiple sockets for a single command. Putting different materia in these sockets will activate all of those sockets when the command is used.
  • Once you get a Plate with linked sockets, you can attach Icon Materia Support.png support materia, Icon Materia Enhancement.png enhancement materia or Icon Materia Ailment.png ailment materia to an offensive spell to increase its function! For instance, Icon Materia Magic Fire.png Fire + Icon Materia Support.png Area = a fire spell that hits all enemies!
  • Materia Levels in a single command will add up, enhancing the power of the offensive spells in that command. Enhancements and Ailments will get no boost to their status effects, and solo materia only offer fixed amounts.
  • There are three Command Sets that you can fill, for convenient switching from one area to the next. You can't switch between sets during combat, but if you have Deck Switching available (part of Chapter 4: A New Light), you CAN assign a different set to your Sub-Deck, allowing you to craft a Materia set complementary to each Deck.
